"Love humiliates. Hatred cradles; soothing." - 'White Oleander'
What does this (White Oleander) quote mean to YOU?
It means that love hurts and shutting yourself off to relationships can give you a false sense of comfort.
Reply:Good movie, too!
gentle poison
Reply:It reminds me of Darth Vader trying to seduce Luke to the dark side.
Reply:this book is one of my favorites...i read it at the perfect time. i was trying very hard to get over the person, who, at that time. was the love of my life.
to me it means that sometimes because of love you do silly things and because of love you leave yourself open for hurt, which can feel humiliating if it's not returned by the other person.
most of us have been that sniveling, groveling "why don't you love me anymore??" person...it's hard to get over that when the other person answers with a big, fat "leave me alone".
the second part of the quote, to me, means that if you turn your love for someone else or people in general into hatred, it makes you feel better...so you think. you get a coating on top of your heart that makes you feel like no one can ever get in again and that helps soothe the pain. it keeps you going and it helps you forget about the hurt and humiliation.
it makes you feel strong and invincible. since i've been to both places, i can say that i prefer humiliating love to that comforting hatred any day.
gosh, i'm going to have to read that book again...it was soooo good...thanks for reminding me about it!
Reply:I really wouldn't worry about it. I think the answer above (about relationships) is very good.
Reply:Love makes you vulnerable. Hate emboldens you.
