What plants grow well outside in Austin, TX?

I was going to use Oleander but it is toxic and I have a animals. I want something to line the back fence in my backyard. I want it to grow at least 7ft tall. I also need a low maintance tree -not oak tree -too many leaves on the ground!

Austin is a great place to grow things - my grandmother lived there for nearly 50 years, and grew all kinds of things. To give you an idea - she had ferns outdoors in pots, crepe myrtles, nandinas, pomegranate bushes, grape vines, roses, zinnias, and all sort of other things. You can also have excellent vegetable and herb gardens there. To get an idea of what works for you, take a trip to the Zilker Botanical Gardens; it's gorgeous, and they have plenty of people who can answer questions. Enjoy!
Reply:crapemertals, fruitless malberry trees, ect...
Reply:I don't use oleander either, but not because of animals, ( you don't have to worry, they don't eat it anyway) you might try juniper trees . I would ride around and see what other people use
Reply:catus.
